Some mid-century homes were built to fit into a hillside. This one was built to crown it. Low-slung roofline cantilevered out toward the water, stone and cedar grounding it to the land, walls of glass turned toward the bay so every morning starts with sailboats on the horizon. The roof cutouts let the trees grow right through — that wasn't a compromise, that was the point. Houses like this are why I fell for mid-century in the first place. They didn't just sit on a piece of land, they had a conversation with it, and they trusted you to appreciate the difference.
